What your notice should include

The law asks for specific details, so please put all of these in your notice:

  • Your full name, postal address, phone number and email address.
  • A description of the work you own. If one notice covers several works, a representative list is enough.
  • The URL of each page on our site where the material appears, with enough detail for us to find it.
  • A statement that you believe in good faith that the use is not authorised by the copyright owner, their agent or the law.
  • A statement, under penalty of perjury, that the information in your notice is accurate and that you own the copyright or may act for the owner.
  • Your physical or electronic signature.

If any of these is missing, we may not be able to act on it.

What we do with a valid notice

We take the material down or block access to it. When someone else supplied it, a guest author for example, we let them know it was removed and why. Anyone who keeps infringing loses the right to publish here.

Counter-notice

Was your content removed by mistake, or confused with something else? You can send a counter-notice to the same address. It needs:

  • Your full name, postal address, phone number and email address.
  • What was removed and the URL where it appeared.
  • A statement, under penalty of perjury, that you believe in good faith the material was removed by mistake or misidentification.
  • A statement that you consent to the jurisdiction of the US federal district court for the judicial district where your address is (or, if your address is outside the United States, any judicial district in which we may be found), and that you will accept service of process from the person who sent the original notice or their agent.
  • Your physical or electronic signature.

Once a valid counter-notice reaches us, we send a copy to the person who complained. If they haven’t told us within 10 business days that they’ve filed a court action, we may put the material back 10 to 14 business days after your counter-notice arrived.

False claims

Under the DMCA, knowingly making a false claim in a notice or counter-notice can make you liable for damages. Please check your facts before writing to us.
